Hard Work ALWAYS Pays Off

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

I LOVE this image from MotiveWeight!

Hard Work ALWAYS Pays Off from Starling Fitness

It reads:

Nothing in this world is handed to you. You have to go out and get it! Nobody said it would be easy, but hard work ALWAYS pays off.

It is SO true!

There is only one, small, problem…

There have been times when I thought I was working hard or I had been told I was working hard (I’m looking at you, heart rate monitor charts), and I really wasn’t. After long bouts of laziness, just moving at all can feel like hard work.

If you think you are working hard and aren’t seeing results, then you need to kick it up a notch. Either you aren’t working hard enough in the gym (or out on the road) or you aren’t working hard enough in the kitchen. REALLY look at your habits and find the places where you can improve.

Don’t fool yourself (like I did) into thinking that you are working hard. If you don’t see results, then you have to try harder. It’s as simple as that.

Motivational MP3 Clips

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

Over the last few years, I’ve linked to little YouTube videos with some motivational talk. Just last week, I downloaded them as MP3s to put on my workout mix.

I wrote this entry a while ago about Finding Nemo and how motivational Dori is:

Here is the MP3 of that video: Finding Nemo – Just Keep Swimming

I also talked about the scene in American Beauty where Kevin Spacey says that he wants to look good naked.

Here is the MP3 of that video: American Beauty: I want to look good naked!

Here is this scene from American Psycho has more to do with staying away from food that can hurt me, but I still like it.

Here is the MP3 of that video: American Psycho – You Can Always Be Thinner, Look Better

I love this one from Parks and Recreation:

If you find any more of these brilliant little clips, please tell me so I can put them here as well!

Success Trains. Failure Complains.

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

I love this motivational poster that I saw on work sweat achieve the other day.

Success Trains. Failure Complains. from Starling Fitness

It reads:

Success Trains. Failure Complains.

When I think of all the ways I’ve failed and then complained about how my body is shaped because of that failure, I need to hang my head in shame. From now on, every time I feel like complaining about clothing that doesn’t fit or how I look, I am going to add a small workout to my day. It will be the thing I do instead of complaining because I want to be a success, not a failure.

My Motivational Shrine

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

The other day, I printed up all the little motivational posters that I have found all over the web and put them on a foam board. I then put it up on the wall right in front of the treadmill, so when I’m running, I can read them.

Here’s a picture of it. Click it to see full-size:

Motivational Poster from Starling Fitness

It really helps me when I’m doing intervals and running. Sometimes that short run seems like an eternity, but being able to look up at that poster and be told to keep going, not to quit, and to shoot for the stars really helps me get through it. Sometimes I just let my eyes wander over the pictures, sometimes I read the words over and over in my head and other times I systematically read EVERY word to myself to keep from obsessing on the time and my legs.

I’m considering making a slideshow of these same images on my phone so if I’m exercising at the gym instead of at home, I can refer to my phone and let it feed me inspiration at ten second intervals.

What do you do to keep inspired and running? I would love some ideas because sometimes it’s hard to get through my short running intervals.

Even If You Fall On Your Face

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

I love this motivational poster I found on Healthy is Classy.

Even if you fall on your face, you're still moving forward from Starling Fitness

It reads:

Even if you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.

  • Victor Klam

It made me chuckle when I read it, but more importantly, it’s TRUE. It reminds me of a song that was recommended to me by a friend called Moving Forward by Hoobastank [iTunes link].

This song is on my workout playlist and I love when it comes on. No matter how slowly I’m running, it reminds me that at least I’m moving forward.

Never Stop Trying

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

I was looking around at fit > skinny and I found this motivational picture.

Never Stop Trying from Starling Fitness

It reads:

Never stop trying; if you just keep going you will succeed.

I love the idea of motivational sayings painted on the trail. Where is this?

I tried to do a little forensics on it, but all I could find were tons of Pins from Pinterest and reblogs from Tumblr.

There is a watermark on the photo for MotiveWeight on Blogspot. I looked through that ENTIRE blog in search of that picture and I found it here:

Unfortunately, it looks like they just found the picture and put their watermark on it, with no reference to where they found it originally.

Does anyone know where this picture was originally taken?

The Tortoise and the Hare: A Fable Revisited

By Laura Moncur @ 8:00 am — Filed under:

The Tortoise and the Hare from Starling FitnessI’ve been wearing this turtle necklace lately to remind me that “Slow and Steady Wins The Race.” The more I think about the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare, however, the more I think that everyone got the moral of the story wrong.

If you are unfamiliar with the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare, here is a brilliant Disney version of it:

Slow and steady wins the race only if the fast people dink around, get cocky and lose sight of their goals. What REALLY won that race is humility and determination. When the hare saw that he had a good lead at the first, he took a NAP! The tortoise was able to pass him. DON’T SLACK OFF!

The Tortoise and the Hare Don't Slack Off from Starling Fitness

Later, when the hare saw that he was so far ahead of the tortoise, he started playing to the audience of adorable bunny girls. So the tortoise caught up to him. BE HUMBLE.

The Tortoise and the Hare: Be HUMBLE from Starling Fitness

Near the end, the tortoise is so close to the finish line and the hare is still goofing off. I love this image of him working his hardest to win the race. WORK YOUR BUTT OFF!

The Tortoise and the Hare: Work Your Butt Off from Starling Fitness

Finally, at the end of the race, the tortoise wins because he’s willing to stretch himself almost out of his shell. STICK YOUR NECK OUT!

The Tortoise and the Hare: Stick Your Neck Out from Starling Fitness

Wearing my little turtle necklace reminds me of all these things and every time I’m tempted to skip a workout, I think about that turtle sneaking by while the hare took a nap. Every time I get a little too excited about losing a pound or two, I remember that tortoise plodding along while the hare flirted with the girl bunnies. Every time I think about taking it easy on my exercise, I think of that turtle busting his tiny tail to finish that race. There is so much more to that story than “slow and steady wins the race,” and I try to remember it all:

  • Don’t slack off
  • Be humble
  • Work your butt off
  • Stick your neck out

Mother and Baby Turtle Diamond Pendant Necklace at Amazon.comHaving a physical reminder of all of that around my neck really helps keep me on track. Here’s a fancy version of my necklace here: Mother and Baby Turtle Diamond Pendant Necklace at Amazon.com. Here’s a less expensive version: Mom and Baby Turtle Silver Blue Opal Necklace Pendant with Chain. Sometimes I wear this bracelet as well: Silvertone Turtle Link Magnetic Clasp Fashion Bracelet.

You don’t need jewelry to remind yourself of your goals, but you do need SOMETHING. Whether it’s a picture, a mantra or mannerism, you need to have something to remind yourself of all the things you want to be.

Fitnessive: A New Tumblr to Follow

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

A special thanks to Funeral For My Fat for posting this motivational poster.

Motivation Doesn't Last from Starling Fitness

It reads:

People often say that motivation doesn’t last.

Well, neither does bathing.

That’s why we recommend it daily.

More importantly, the poster came from a Tumblr called Fitnessive. I found a TON of great motivational posters there and immediately started following them. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Only You Decide from Starling Fitness

It reads:

A calendar determines when the year ends, but only you can decide when a new you begins.

Everyday Is A Good Day to Workout from Starling Fitness

It reads:

EVERYDAY is a good day to work-out.

It’s so nice to find another blog to follow that provides so many inspirational reasons to get off my butt and exercise!

I Wanna Look Good Naked!

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

I love this animated GIF from Funeral For My Fat.

I Wanna Look Good Naked from Starling Fitness

It shows Kevin Spacey running outside in grey sweats and it reads:

I wanna look good naked!

This scene is from American Beauty and you can see the whole thing here:

His physically fit friends ask him,

Are you lookin’ to just lose weight or do you wanna have increased strength and flexibility as well?

Is it enough? Is it enough motivation to want to look good naked?

Yes, yes it is…
