Eating Healthy Doesn’t Have To Be Expensive

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

I’ve said before that eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive. Now, the Hillbilly Housewife has proven me right. She has a week-long menu of food for 4-6 people that costs only 45 dollars. She is assuming that your kitchen is bare and doesn’t even have baking soda, so the ingredients might be less expensive to purchase if you have a well-stocked kitchen.

Not only is it inexpensive, but she has included the nutrition information and the calorie-counts for each day. They average 1700 calories a day, so she has created a perfect healthy diet on a LOW budget.

Next time I hear people say it’s too expensive to buy healthy food, I’ll just laugh to myself and know better, because I found the Hillbilly Housewife.

Oh wow I have her site already in my bookmarks. Does she have a blog as well. 🙂 thanks for the head up.

PS Powdered Milk is a great way to save money if you’re doing WW. The WW meeting smoothie secret is low calorie powdered milk. I use powdered milk that’s 80 calories a serving.

Wow- I just made her milkshake recipe using splenda and my whole family loved it…I’d never thought that the secret to making a really great powdered milk and ice drink is to add a little oil. It worked great- really creamy, just like a Frosty. I give it 5 stars!

Let me say this sounds like a nutritious menu and it is very economical. I respectfully say it works for women who have a family to feed and don’t work out of the home. I don’t eat alot of white flour and.. 1) I work 9-5 so I would not be making any bread, which frankly I don’t need anyway or mac and cheese. 2) where is the fruit? And don’t say in the oj.

This is a good meal plan, for people with family – which I am not. But not for me. I do not find it appealing and it is too time consuming. Of course, I spend time cleaning veggies and bagging them, and I am on the computer now…. I guess we all make our priorities.

I think a lot of times, eating healthy is expensive because we make it expensive. Myself, I have willpower issues with food. I find it easier to buy 12 bags of single serve pretzels, rather than 1 bag and force myself to have willpower to only eat 1 portion. It’s much more expensive to buy singel serve items than by bulk! Buying for convenience or other personal reasons (i.e. single serve, or frozen meals) does cost more! But you can still eat healthily without the convenience items- IF you can maintain personal control.
