Quote of the Month: February 2008

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

Non-descript black cover from FlickrIf you are one of the many people who have bought a Starling Fitness Yearly Journal, then you know that the quote of the month is about bravery and patience. If not, here it is:

“We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world.”

If you started the New Year off with a bang, then you might be running into the first stumbling stone right about now. Maybe you’re feeling hungry or you’re sore from exercising too much. Whatever it is, know that the joy from achieving your goals will outweigh whatever unpleasantness you’re feeling right now.

Take a few moments right now to really think about why you want to lose weight and get fit.

  • What do you want to look like?

  • What do you want to feel like?

  • What do you want when people see you for the first time? What about old friends who haven’t seen you for a while?

  • What kind of person will you be when you finally reach your goal weight?

Sit down with a piece of paper or write out what you want here in the comments section. Really visualize what you want and imagine the joy that you will feel when you finally get there. The stronger of a vision that you can get of the outcome you want, the more likely you’ll achieve it.

If you order it now, you can choose the month you want it to start and it will last you a year from that date. You won’t have to throw away any unused days from the first of the year. You can start fresh now.

Quote of the Month: January 2008

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

Non-descript black cover from FlickrIf you are one of the many people who have bought a Starling Fitness Yearly Journal, then you know that the quote of the month is about real joy. If not, here it is:

“Real joy comes not from ease or riches or from the praise of men, but from doing something worthwhile.”

Whenever I start to feel down or depressed, I make a list. Not everyone is a list maker, but it works for me. I make a list of EVERYTHING that needs to be done, no matter how insignificant.

  • Get out of bed
  • Shower
  • Get dressed
  • Clean the clutter off the table

You get the idea…

Then I DO the things on the list and allow myself that brief moment of joy by checking them off the list. It’s the doing things that makes me feel better.

Sir Wilfred Grenfell insists that the things that we do must be worthwhile in order to get real joy and I won’t argue with him there. Taking care of yourself is one of the most worthwhile things that you can do, so make a list of healthy things you can do to take care of yourself and gladly check each item off every day.

Quote of the Month: December 2007

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

Non-descript black cover from FlickrIf you ordered yourself a Starling Fitness Yearly Journal, then you know that the quote of the month for December is:

The more I want to get something done, the less I call it work. – Richard Bach

I want to get to my goal weight. I’m not going to let Christmas get in my way. Are you? Will I call it work or deprivation? What will I do to prevent myself from feeling left out?

What about you? Are you going to let the holidays stop you from achieving what you want? Let’s get this done together and it won’t even feel like work. Take a few minutes to write down what you want to achieve this month.

The Quote of the Month is meant to be an Inner Workout for you. Find some time during the month and allow yourself to write the answers to the questions posted. You can write them on paper, on a word processor or here in the comments section. Whatever works for you as long as you do it.

Keep writing until you find out something about yourself that you didn’t know before. I’ve also heard that it works to keep writing until you cry, but that doesn’t really work for me. Whatever works for you. Just keep writing until it feels right.

Quote of the Month: November 2007

By Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am — Filed under:

Non-descript black cover from FlickrIf you ordered yourself a Starling Fitness Yearly Journal, then you know that the quote of the month for November is:

Of all afflictions, the worst is self-contempt.
– Berthold Auerbach (1812 – 1882)

If you are suffering from being overweight, is that truly your worst affliction? If you are taking medication for diabetes, high blood pressure or any other weight-related diseases, are they really the root of your suffering?

Take a few minutes and write down what you are feeling about your health and whatever afflictions you feel you may have. Is Berthold Auerback right? Is self-contempt the problem? What do you think?

How To Delay Gratification

By Laura Moncur @ 10:00 am — Filed under:

Retrasos by Daquella manera from Flickr“Delays Expected”

That phrase is usually means bad things. Suddenly, you’re worried about being late for work or unable to complete your chores. Whenever I hear the word “delay” it has SUCH a negative connotation that I want to avoid whatever it is.

Delayed gratification, however, is supposed to be a GOOD thing. People who can delay gratification are far more successful than those who never learned that skill. I talked about it here:

That’s all well and good, but HOW do we learn how to delay gratification? The definition of it seems pretty self-explanatory: taking an action NOW that will cause a desired result LATER. If it were as easy as it sounds, then we would all be incredibly fit and eat only healthy food.

The important thing to remember is that this is DELAYED gratification, not NO gratification. Here are the techniques that I’ve used to focus on what I will achieve in exchange.

Be CLEAR About What You Want

It’s really hard to say no to that cake or pizza when it’s right there in your face. When you can smell the frosting or melted cheese, you have to have a CLEAR picture of what your final goal will be like in order to bypass it. One way to do that is making a photo of yourself when you’re at goal. I’ve talked about this before:

Being able to SEE what I’ll look like if I just say no to another slice of pizza is really helpful. I keep a copy of the photo on my iPhone ALL the time just to keep myself focused on what I want.

Make A Mantra

Sometimes it helps me to have a phrase that I repeat to myself. For me, the mantra that has worked the best for me is:

“I’m in control, not the food.”

Of course, that phrase hasn’t always been my mantra. I used to use the quote from Winston Churchill.

“It’s not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what’s required.”

Mantras are VERY personal things, so you’ll have to choose one of your own, but here are a few to give you some ideas.

Give Yourself Mini-Gratifications

Maybe if you only have ten pounds to lose, you can focus solely on your final goal, but if your goal is a big one, you need to have several pit stops along the way so that you don’t feel like you have had no positive reinforcement for months.

If your goal is a weight goal, you can give yourself presents for every few pounds lost. If your goal is a fitness goal, you can reward yourself for every speed record or distance you’ve achieved. Whatever your goal, you MUST give yourself mini-gratifications to keep the beast within you feeling placated.

You Have To DO It!

Jim CarreyThere is a famous story about Jim Carrey.

“I wrote myself a check for ten million dollars for acting services rendered and dated it Thanksgiving 1995. I put it in my wallet and it deteriorated. And then, just before Thanksgiving 1995, I found out I was going to make ten million dollars for Dumb & Dumber. I put that check in the casket with my father because it was our dream together.”

Hardly anyone talks about the corollary to the story, however.

“I would visualize things coming to me. It would just make me feel better. Visualization works if you work hard. That’s the thing. You can’t just visualize and go eat a sandwich.”

You can’t just make plans, visualize yourself at goal, and repeat mantras. You have to actually DO what you need to do to get to your goal. Whether that means eating healthier food or getting your butt out of bed an hour earlier every morning to exercise. Whatever you need to do, you have to DO it!

In the end, delaying gratification is THE KEY to getting to a healthy weight and fitness level. Putting off the tasty treats and luxury of sleeping in is what differentiates those that get to their goals and those that dream about them. It’s a skill that needs just as much practice as learning to play a game or how to cook a healthy meal, but when you take the time to learn that skill, you’ll profit from it far more than you can imagine!

Good Food from Fresh Ingredients

By Laura Moncur @ 8:37 am — Filed under:

I love this motivational poster from this month’s Prevention magazine:

You dont have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces just good food from fresh ingredients. by Julia Child from Starling Fitness

It reads:

You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces – just good food from fresh ingredients.

  • Julia Child

It’s the truth. You don’t need a fancy plan. You don’t need to pay tons of money for shakes, pills and bars. All you need is some fresh food and some simple ingredients. The next time you’re tempted to try an expensive food plan with delivered meals, remember this quote from Julia Child and know that all you need to do to be healthy is make simple food from fresh ingredients.

Even After Forty, You Can Get Healthy

By Laura Moncur @ 10:12 am — Filed under:

I saw this quote and I felt I should say something about it.

Of all the self fulfilling prophecies in our culture the assumption that aging means decline and poor health is probably the deadliest. Marilyn Ferguson from The Quotations Page

I started this weight loss journey when I was a child. I tried to lose weight for years. I was never able to keep it off for a month, much less a year. I didn’t come to Overeater’s Anonymous until I was 44 years old. I am now 46 years old and I am closer to a healthy weight than I have ever been in my life.

Don’t let the idea of middle age, menopause or anything else get in the way of your success. You can do this, no matter what your age. Don’t let this fat kill you just because you think you can’t do it. Don’t be a victim of that self-fulfilling prophecy.

Little Victories

By Laura Moncur @ 10:24 am — Filed under:

I saw this quotations today and I wanted to scream, “Yes!”

Ive grown to realize the joy that comes from little victories is preferable to the fun that comes from ease and the pursuit of pleasure. Lawana Blackwell from The Quotations Page

It reads:

Little victories! They are SO much powerful than I ever realized. The power of a to-do list is astonishing to me. If I add a goal to my to-do list, I have SUCH a good feeling when I check it off! Even the fun things I do every day, like reading a book for 30 minutes feels better when I get to check it off my list.

I can’t stress how important how LITTLE the victories should be. For example, I have a goal to write or work on my fiction book for FIVE MINUTES every day. Just five minutes. You would think that I would get NOTHING done if I only worked on it five minutes a day, but after only seven months, I’m almost done with my first draft. I didn’t have that HUGE delay when I usually do (about the time I have to be mean to my characters), because I put my face in front of the computer and wrote for five minutes a day. Sometimes I was counting down the minutes and only wrote two or three sentences, but most days, I did more. That TINY victory every day has yielded me HUGE results.

You want to eat healthy and exercise? I suggest that you start keeping a to-do list. Every day, you write the same goals, but make them TINY. Make them positive. Instead of writing, “Don’t eat junk food or sugar,” write “Eat five fruits and vegetables each day.” The second goal is far easier to achieve because you’re ADDING food to your diet instead of removing it. It’s positive and it will have the same effect.

Give yourself tons of little victories every day and your mood will elevate, you will achieve more and you will know success instead of failure.

Don’t Expect To See A Change If You Don’t Make One

By Laura Moncur @ 8:10 am — Filed under:

Seventy pounds. I have lost seventy pounds and have stayed here for a few months. I still have thirty pounds to go to get to the weight that the government thinks I should weight. I don’t know if I will ever get there, but I do know that my weight loss has stalled and slowed down to a crawl.

And then I realized that I was expecting a change without making one.

Don't Expect To See A Change If You Don't Make One from Starling Fitness

I have lost these seventy pounds by limiting my calories without regard to the health of food. I know restricting my food has caused binges in the past, but ADDING healthy food into my plan never did.

Don't Expect To See A Change If You Don't Make One from Starling Fitness

When I dropped Weight Watchers for the last time, I dropped their healthy ideas as well. That eight glasses of water and five fruits and veggies a day checklist. THAT was a good thing for me. Why did I drop that?

Don't Expect To See A Change If You Don't Make One from Starling Fitness

It’s time for me to add those checklists back into my daily routine. They HELPED me eat healthier. They helped me stay away from unhealthy food. It’s time I made another change to my routine in order to see a change in myself.

The Little Touches

By Laura Moncur @ 8:00 am — Filed under:

I saw this quote and it made me realize that it doesn’t take a HUGE effort to get healthy and stay there.

It is just the little touches after the average man would quit that make the master's fame. Orison Swett Marden from The Quotations Page

It reads:

It is just the little touches after the average man would quit that make the master’s fame.

  • Orison Swett Marden

It doesn’t take grueling workouts or starvation to get to a healthy weight. You just have to KEEP GOING. It’s the Christmas season and it’s the time when everyone quits their healthy diet and exercise and proceed to gain ten to fifteen pounds. If you just add those little touches to your masterpiece, you wouldn’t have to face grueling workouts and starvation in January.

DON’T QUIT right now. THIS MONTH is the “little touch” to your program. Just like that extra effort that a master painter would make to her work, this is your little touch to your program. The average person quits during December, but keeping up with your eating and exercise routine is the difference between you and the average person. It’s what will make you a master.
