That tiny mention about putting on RUNNING SHOES is so important. I'd been running in cross-trainers (very old ones at that) until 2 weeks ago. I finally made the effort and financial outlay to get proper running shoes. Cool Running has some great articles on shes here and here and the Brooks website has a good guide to which of their shoes are the best for you. My shoes may be way too bright and spaceship looking but it's like driving a Ferrari.

I love Fixx's book (and supposedly those were HIS legs...nice!!), Marathoning for Mortals is another good one w/ good parts on how to interpret various pains (by duration, when it occurs etc) and how to avoid injuries.
An insprirational book is Ultramarathon Man by Dan Karnazes.

I highly recommend "The Beginning Runner's Handbook: The Proven 13-Week Walk-Run Program" for anyone who's just starting out and maybe thinks they're too out of shape or overweight to be able to be a runner.

Every time I'm ready to start an exercise program (again), this is the book I use to get back into running. I've done it both with treadmills and on the road. I have to admit there is something absolutely zenful about running once you make it a part of your life.
